Emily vonSwearingen presents a two-part body of work from the viewpoint
of the character “the Insomniac”. She has traversed the
urban environment, capturing photographic images of signage and odd
text sources; removed them from their original context and re-configured
them in a video work and interactive mixed-media wall piece. She
has also created a large scale video wall projection of jellyfish
in poetic, visual slow motion with corresponding mixed media works
for an elegant yet frightening exploration of the dream state.
Jake
Adam York’s “Legba Says” is built around a
long poem whose central character is a West African god of crossroads
and doorways long ago transplanted to America. The poem, displayed
in two scrolls running to more than thirty feet, locates the ubiquitous
Legba at his many crossings while presenting witnesses and recording
the god’s incarnations in the contemporary world. This poem
is accompanied by photographic work that imagines the crossings
Legba haunts.
Emily vonSwearingen has exhibited her photographic
and mixed
media works in New York City, Denver, Atlanta, Savannah and Portland.
She is featured as a selected experimental filmmaker on Modflash.com.
She is currently the Associate Director of PlatteForum (Arts
Organization) in Denver and works as a special commission artist
and consultant.
Jake Adam York is the author of Murder Ballads. His poems have
appeared in numerous journals, including Oxford American and
Shenandoah, and
have garnered an individual artist fellowship from the Colorado
Council on the Arts. York’s multimedia work has shown at
Belmar’s
Block7 and CultureHaus and has been an Creative Resident at PlatteForum.
He is an associate professor of English at the University of Colorado
at Denver.
