'Considering the Sublime'

Scott Engel
William Sutton

New work from
Scott Engel and William Sutton

Opening Reception:
Friday, February 10th, 6:00pm - 9:00pm

Colorado artists and friends for thirty years, Scott Engel and William Sutton are showing new photographic work at Ironton in February. The images are an attempt to consider culture and nature and abstract significant form from the larger organic whole.

Scott Engel’s images, from his DeCompose Series, are created from organic collages of magazines, maps, musical scores, art history books and other printed matter that are layered and then aged in a compost pile. After months of decomposing the conglomeration of juxtaposed detritus is photographed animating elements of culture and the forces of nature.

William Sutton’s images of light, water, and vegetation, express an organic exuberance and formal certainty of biotic structure. The images in the exhibition create a context suggestive of the sublime, an intrinsic sacredness in wonder at the world, and terrific and unsettling reparation.

Ironton Studios is open Monday through Friday from 10 to 4, and Saturdays from 12 to 4.
