In the month of November Ironton Gallery will present new work by
Robin Schaefer and Syrie Kovitz. The show is a relating of experiences
intrinsically connected with the fairytale ‘The Red Shoes’.
Robin Schaefer is known for creating paintings that are iconic and
nostalgic in nature, using traditional painting techniques that involve
building up thin layers of paint on the canvas. Schaefer typically
finds ways to isolate the image, to iconize it beyond its self, making
the image larger than life. In her upcoming show Schaefer explores
the themes behind the fairytale of the red shoes by painting simple
images that express a deep dichotomy, one that is emotional and yet
quiet. These are seemingly innocent images that become deeper expressions
of a more internal world.
An old soul in a youthful body, Syrie Kovitz's work reflects the many
facets of her experience. Her images seem to spring from an ancient
dream, or genetic memory. In her hands the camera captures rare light
and shadow, caging them in print like exotic birds. Kovitz longs for
wings -- the intrinsic desire evidenced in her sublimely ethereal work.
In addition to her still photography, she is working on a film she
shot this summer in Romania.
These two artists combined create a dynamic
show that expresses haunting interpretations of themes relating to
the fairytale of the red shoes.
Please come and experience these two unique artistic approaches.
