Fish Prize, a story. Paintings by Matt Holman / by hadley hooper

OPENING RECEPTION First Friday December 5th 6-9pm

Ironton Studios & Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of paintings by Matt Holman. Fish Prize ,a story, is a series of thirty-one watercolors that present a single wordless narrative about things like life, love, loss, afterlife, fate, and chance. The story’s arc follows the intertwined lives of three people and their seemingly happenstance encounters with fishermen, jewelers, construction workers, policemen, waiters, busboys, photographers, ministers, contest judges, sailors, a Saint, and, of course, fish.

The pieces incorporate storytelling concepts from fine art, comics, and cartoons. In preparation for the series, Matt studied work by many narrative artists including Romare Bearden, Ida Applebroog, and Juan Muñoz.

“It’s my hope,” Matt says, “that the paintings will stand as individual artworks and also work as one larger narrative piece.”
In addition to the paintings, a Fish Prize book will be available that serves as both a show catalog and a story book.

Husband and wife team Matt Holman and Patricia ‘Murph’ Murphy have been part of the Ironton studio community for over 13 years. They have been an important part of our creative fabric and it’s fitting that Matt will be the final exhibit that Ironton Gallery will offer before the reins are turned over to the Colorado Photographic Arts Center in January of 2016.
